Normally this is'nt essential. But it's possible because more than one person may share the same name. So it's works fine if each application is assigned to a unique number. Many businesses believe the SSN is ideal for this purpose. Please be care of your SSN and give this only businesses that you trust.

The reason you are asked is to verify your income and credit status. However, I would not give this information until I was guaranteed the apartment pending the check.

Anybody that you rent from wants to know that you have good credit. To obtain a credit score, a landlord will need your social security number. That is why they ask you for it.

Most apartment rental companies now require a credit check. In order to do that they'll need your Social Security Number.
