Do guinea pigs bite?

My daughter would like a guinea pig for Christmas but I am concerned that they could be an aggressive animal.

Although not aggressive, cavies might bite if you hurt them. They may also give a bit of a soft warning nibble if they are on your lap and need to pee. Make sure to think carefully about getting a pig for young kids. They need larger (C+C) cages, better food than pet stores sell, and should be kept in pairs.

Not unless hurt or scared. And please rethink your plan (or at least thoroughly research beforehand) and adopt rather than supporting breeding mills and pet stores that abuse small animals.

It depends on the specific guinea pig, but most do not bite. I have had half a dozen guinea pigs over several years and have never been bitten. Generally, as long as you and your daughter treat them with kindness you will not get bitten. Play with the specific pig you want in the store to be sure.

Guinea pigs are generally very placid and docile animals, however, they can give a nasty nip if they are treated roughly or feel threatened. If your daughter is very gentle and caring, she should be fine, but I would not recommend them as a pet for very young children.

(cont. from above)...they do have a biological need to chew/bite to keep their teeth cut down. if they are biting seems out of the ordinary, they may need to have their teeth looked at by a vet...fyi...
