Italian roast would make good espresso. It is dark enough without tasting burnt like French roast. The key is getting a fine grind, and high enough water temperature and pressure.

Espresso is not any certain kind of roast, it is a method for making a type of drink. Thus, any type of bean can be used to make espresso. That said, the important part of making espresso is grinding the bean down to a very fine grain and then forcing hot water through at a very high pressure.
