Can you tell me how to know how much to lift?

Lift what your body allows you to. Depends on what you are trying to achieve, try and go less weight, high reps to start, and then if you want to add bulk, do the opposite.

A lot depends on your body weight and how much you have lifted in the past. The safest way is to start with very light weights (10 or 15 lbs. ) and increase weight each time you exercise until your progress stalls.

If you want to lose weight and improve stamina you should lift lighter amount of weight with higher repetitions per set, eight to ten repetitions. I you want to gain muscle mass you should lift heavier amounts of weight with fewer repetitions per set, three to five repetitions per set.
