When training for rock climbing or simulating rock climbing you should always focus exercise on both upper and lower body strength. It is good to use an elliptical machine or a treadmill while carrying weights. If you have a local beach you can also run up and down the hills of the beach with weights in your hands.

If access to a wall is not readily available, toning your upper body's muscles can be done without special equipment. Push ups and curl ups are both incredibly beneficial.
