When you are in the beginning stages of sleep or just about to wake up in the morning, you may be able to have use of all of your senses. It is when you are in a deep sleep that you are almost in a coma of sorts.

The imagination can become so vivid in dreams that sometimes smells can be very realistic. On the other hand, sometimes people are smelling what is already physically around them.

Since you experienced the smell yourself, the short answer to this query would "Yes, you can smell while dreaming. " It's possible in reality you smelled another pleasant aroma and your dream interpreted it as your mom's cookies. Or perhaps somebody actually was baking. Since you classify the aroma as wonderful, whatever the experience that precipitated the dream, was pleasant.

In dreams we go to places far away, we get to meet people who are impossible or near impossile to mee tin real life. Experiencing smell is just one of such feelings.

You can't actually physically smell a dream (nor do any of your four other senses while dreaming), but dreams are mental, and that sense can still "mentally" work.

All your senses can be activated in the world of dreams, and aroma is very closely linked to memory, so it's not unusual to relive powerful smells in dreams.

Yes... I believe I can. Sometimes I wake up because of the smell. Sometimes I don't wake up but instead I dream about it.
