If you have a wired connection (such as a local area network) and a wireless router (20-40 bucks at best buy), the wireless router will convert the connection into a signal that your computer's wireless card will pick up and convert back into a connection to the internet.

Wireless Internet is made available to you by a router and an access line. Internet access is provided by cable, phone or satellite companies. The computer will need to be configured with the router. You will need to go to the Control Panel and set up your Internet Connection.

Think cell phone for a computer. It allows you to access the internet without plugging into the wall. You just have to be within 400ft of a transmitter.

With use of two machines (a modem and a router), a signal is put out that transmits internet connection. When your computer detects the signal, it connects and you have internet.

Basically, your computer transform your informations in radio signal an transmit it to the router. The router take that data, decodes it and send it on the internet via an ethernet cable, then send you back the replying information via radio signal. Same thing for your cellphone or TV.
