Most likely the only problem you could have with this type of transmission is the clutch as these are very tough transmission units.

The transmission is the biggest killer of cars. If your trannie goes then it will probably more expensive to fix than to replace the car. With the engine idling try moving to all the gears. If you cannot you will need a mechanic to run a diagnostic exam for you.

Your best initial fix will be to check the transmission fluid to make sure it is properly topped up and clean. This is a very simple fix but is often overlooked.

The Jeep 46rh tranny is known for problems. The issues start when the car won't shift from 2nd for 3rd gear. You can try some "Marvyn's Mystery Tranny Fluid" for a cheap fix, but you'll most likely need a rebuilt or new transmission. This is gonna be expensive, but this Jeep model is a money pit.

You can always get a mechanic to troubleshoot for you. Alternatively, you can try shifting to all the gears with the engine idle.

Check the transmission fluid to make sure that the fluid levels are okay. If you jeep has one you can try resetting the PCM by disconnecting the battery for a few hours and then reattach and see if that has helped at all. A mechanic can look at your jeep and tell you what is wrong.
