South Africa and West India used to be colonies. They were split up among different European countries. The America's also used to be considered a colony before the American Revolution. India escaped Britain's rule with the help of Gandhi.
One colonial country is France, who in the twentieth century took control of Indochina (present day Vietnam) and occupied it until they were ousted in a bloody war.
