A polarized plug is a plug that has different sized prongs which allow them to work only in one direction. They utilize this to keep the current flowing in only one direction, the same as a battery manufactures do with the positive and negative sides of the battery.

A polarized plug is an electrical plug that can only plug into the wall outlet when inserted at the proper orientation. That is, it cannot be plugged in "upside-down." This is due to the fact that one of the prongs is slightly wider than the other; therefore, it will only fit in the proper side of the outlet.

As its' name suggests, a polarized plug can be inserted only one way. This is usually done to keep all ground, neutral and hot connections consistant throughout. It's also used to assure ground is the first made connection, in that the ground lug is the longest of the plug. It can also specifically orient connections for safety purposes.

Polarized plugs are a safety feature to help make a product safer and reduce the risk of electric shocks. Some plugs have a wider prong on one side. This ensures that they can only be plugged in one way allowing manufacturer's to better insulate certain areas of the appliance.
