If you buy a car from a seller before you can get the title you have to show proof of insurance before you can change the title over. You can drive the car and take your chance the police won't stop you but you both will be liable.

Most insurers immediately insure you for a period between five and 30 days for new vehicle purchases. This means that you can drive a car from any seller and have coverage. You, however, must report the purchase to your insurer between the purchase date and deadline indicated in your policy.

Depending on your state, your insurance may cover a newly purchased car for 30 days if it replaces a different car. If it is just a new purchase, you must buy insurance for it.

The rules for car insurance vary somewhat from state to state. However, all states require that you have valid insurance for any car that you own and drive; it does not matter how or where you bought the car.

No matter who the seller is, you cannot drive a car without insurance. If the seller is a private owner, if you have full coverage related with your current car, then you can drive any car that you wish. However, as soon as you are able, then you should add the new car to your policy.
