Can you cultivate watermint with cuttings?

Any mint including watermint can be grown from cuttings. Just as long as the cuttings have roots or are cut under a leaf node you could grow and propagate from them. You must put the cuttings in water overnight. If they do not wilt you should transfer them to soft loam soil.

You can grow the mint in soil or water. Place cuttings in jar filled almost to top with water and place in window that receives at least six hours of sunlight, replacing water at least once weekly. If planting in soil, place in indirect light, keep soil moist, and mist regularly. Plenty of light keeps mint from getting "leggy"!

a cutting or division, from a larger plant is one of the best methods of propagation, although a very hardy species this is best undertaken in springtime. Cut back folige to about 4inches then divide the root, then pot up in seperate pots to regrow

You certainly can try. Sometimes you will be lucky, other times not so much. Take the cuttings and place them in water before you plant them. Wait to see if they are sprouting shoots in the water, then transplant them.
