Can you compare a United Methodist elder and a deacon?

An elder is charged with ruling and shepherding. They are to be teachers of the word, and in charge of the spiritual welfare of the flock. Deacons serve practical needs.

The Elders' job is to help people connect to God. They're appointed by the bishop, serve multiple congregations, and can perform some sacraments. The bishop also appoints Deacons, who are attached to a single congregation. Their role is to connect the people to God through service to the church.

An elder is supposed to connect people to God. A deacon connects the people of God to service the world.

An elder is ordained by a bishop to minister through word, service order and sacrament. Both men and women can be elders. A deacon is a clergyman called by God. Ordained by a bishop it is a step towards ordination as an elder.

Elders reflect the role of the apostles in that they are responsible for pastoral care. Deacons look after the practical needs of the church.
