Can I write off work-related living expenses on my taxes?

I live in Florida, but I fly to Chicago every week and work Monday through Friday and live in a hotel.

Yes, you can write them off. That is allowed. Actually you may get more money back on your taxes that way if you state all your expenses. You may also need some legal work to prove this. The legal work needs to provided by your company so you can write it off.

If your employer does not reimburse you for travel, hotel stays or meals, all of those become tax deductible. Keep track of mileage to the airports, taxi fares, tolls, meals, etc. However, if you're commuting TO Chicago from Florida, and the job is located IN Chicago- this could be tricky.

Yes, generally, your (un-reimbursed?) business-related living & travel expenses can be deducted as "employee-business-expenses". If you are being reimbursed, then you need to show any over-reimbursements as income. Caution: There are some-circumstances where the IRS could rule that your "tax-domicile" is really "Chicago, IL" and not your-Florida-home, and subsequently disallow expensing some of your Chicago living & travel expenses.

No these expenses are not going to qualify for a tax write-off. These would be considered voluntary expenses because you could move to Chicago and not incur them. Brief hotel stays not paid for by your company on necessary business trips can be a tax write off in some cases.
