Of course! This always looks great on a really knotted piece of wood. Try a dark reddish brown, I find it's the best.

You can do this, but you may not like the final look. The knots will still stand out under the stain. The stain will also be lighter on the wood because pine is so light.

Of course you can stain any wood any color you want. You should be careful with the dark stains pine is a very light colored wood and no matter how dark the stain it will still be lighter on the wod than in the can. The knots will take more of the stain and you may not like the contrast.
