Yes they can be. This breed of hamster is supposed to be really friendly. They're actually Syrian hamsters. Pet stores call them black bear hamsters and charge more for them. You shouldn't feed them citrus fruit, tomatoes, beans, garlic, chocolate, butter, onions, or any "regular human food". Have fun with it!

It is not possible to have a black bear hamster that is brown because the term "black bear hamster" is just a nickname for Syrian Hamsters that happen to be black due to a genetic mutation. It is not a different species, just a specific coloration of Syrian Hamster.

They can turn brown with age but usually they will be black. Also, if a black bear hamster mates with a brown hamster, it can be brown, though black fur is the dominant trait.

"Black Bear" hamsters are black Syrian hamsters. The name black bear is a gimmick created by pet stores to be able to charge more for a "special" coat colour. If your black Syrian has a brownish tint to his/her coat then you likely have a sable, not a black.

A black bear hamster should be black; teddy bear hamsters are brown. Black bear hamsters might have some white on them, but generally they are jet black.
