Can a iliotibial band injury caused by running be helped?

I injured my ilotibial band, or IT band, running last week. I am afraid I will have to have surgery to fix it.

It depends on the type of damage and the least damage can mean that resting will allow for the body to fix it and the worst would be if the damage is too extensive and surgery might be the only way. Only images such as X-Ray and MRI can tell the amount of damage.

Absolutely! Surgery for iliotibial band pain would be very rare. The first step is to stop running until the pain is completely resolved. This may take up to 6 weeks. Work with a qualified physical therapist to learn exercises that will prevent further inflammation by improving your form.

Apply an ice pack on the area for 20-30 minutes, 3-4 times a day. Perhaps your physician will give you a corticosteroid injection to help with pain and inflamation.

An iliotibial band injury can be treated in several ways. Using flexible bandages or a knee brace in combination with anti-inflammatory medicine or other pain relievers should be considered as an initial treatment option. Also, icing the knee after activity is another treatment.
