Can a dog be given children's Motrin, if so how much for a twenty lb dog?

My dog is recovering from surgery and I would like to give him Motrin for pain.

Never, ever give your dog medicine intended for humans without the advice of your veterinarian. Many common over-the-counter medications (Motrin is one of them) can do serious, irreparable damage to dogs, especially small ones. Motrin and Tylenol can actually kill a cat in short order.

No! Dogs cannot have Motrin or any other type of human pain reliever. Children's Benadryl is best and there are about 12. 5mg of diphenhydramine in each teaspoon (5ml). This can be used to calm your pet down, make them drowsy and want to sleep. The vet should have given you pain relievers, contact them as soon as possible.

No, absolutely do not give Motrin (or any other any ibuprofen-based pain relievers) to any pet. It is very toxic to dogs and, even at very low doses, can be fatal. Your vet will be able to prescribe appropriate canine pain relievers.

NEVER give your dog human medication unless your dog's vet says it is okay for your dog. Some medications are okay but can kill your dog if given in excess. If your dog is in pain you should call his vet and see if there is something they can prescribe for your dog.

I have found that you can use children's medication on dogs using a similar weight (i. e. 20 lb child equals 20 lb dog). Try tylenol first if available.
