Are parents liable for the debts of adult children?

My brother has amassed a large amount of debt and I do not want my parents to have to pay it.

Your parents shouldn't be held liable for this debt unless they co-signed on it. If they did, they will be expected to pay if your brother doesn't.

Your parents are not responsible for your brother's debt unless they are party to it. That is, if they cosigned a loan, they will be responsible for paying it off.

If the debt was amassed after he reached the age of legal adulthood, then he and he alone is responsible for the debt.

No parents are not liable for the debts made by adult children. Because they are also grown up and can understand every problems. If they are unemployed they can discuss with parents the purpose of borrowing credits from others. If the parents agrees and allows to borrow then they can help to repay it.
