Question by  Anonymous

Are manual lawnmowers viable alternatives for powered lawnmowers?

... or are they only suited for small yards?

Until a more effective manual mower design is introduced, I'd say a powered lawn mower will probably give you the best cut. Once there is a good enough manual lawn mower on the market, it would be worth it to switch over to a more environmentally friendly alternative.

I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but you might consider NO lawnmower by going to a synthetic lawn. The new synthetic lawns are absolutely amazing, nothing like the old astroturf that you might be familiar with. Obviously, they require no watering, weeding or cutting.

manuals are better for the environment, but i have found they don't cut as well. the blades in a powered lawnmower also act as fans that sort of suck the blades of grass up before being cut... this makes the cut very even.

if you are concerned about the environment (we all should be), then you might consider a lawn alternative like xeriscaping, or a synthetic lawn. modern synthetic lawns are super realistic and do not look/feel like astroturf... and of course, they don't require lawnmowers!  add a comment

Depends on how much work you're willing to undertake. It's doable for any size lawn but it all matters if you are willing to undertake the labor involved.

Yes if you are young and healthy and want to do a workout while mowing your grass. They could probably handle a city-sized yard, but not a quarter of an acre.
