Are lions and hyenas enemies?

Most accounts of lions and hyenas as enemies is a very accurate portrayal. For the most part, it's due to competition over prey. Although, there are instances where lions have been known to hunt down hyena's to kill them. They continued to pursue the hyenas even after they began to retreat, which makes their actions more offensive than defensive.

Yes. They are both apex predators that share the same prey base so they are natural rivals. They generally avoid one another until the food supplies run low.
