Yes they are! About ten to fifteen pound dumbbells are great for thoracic back muscles. You sit on your weight bench and lean over. Grab the dumbbell and lift it up, bending your arm at the elbow. Make sure to move your shoulder outward as move your arm back down.

They can be, provided you do the right exercises. Exercises that need a lot of stability through the back are the best, especially multi-joint explosive exercises. The one armed dumbbell snatch is perhaps the best one, though dumbbell power cleans can also work.

Dumbells are great for all part of your back. Dumbells force you to control the motion you are trying to ahcieve. Controling these motions brings many stabilizing muscles into the exercise and cause an overall improvement in strength and conditioning. You should definitely include several dumbell exercises in your back routine.

They can be, as long as you maintain good form and don't push yourself with weights you really can't handle yet. As long as you have a good coach or trainer who regularly checks to make sure you are lifting correctly, dumbbells can be an excellent way to strengthen the thoracic back muscles. One armed dumbbell rows are especially good.
